Retakes may not be applicable in certain course types or if scores are above 80% on those activities.

Quiz and Test Retakes

Pre-test quizzes are only allowed 1 attempt to pass with 80%. No retakes.

Students are automatically allowed two attempts to pass a quiz at the end of a lesson.

Retakes on quiz and test reviews shall be up to the discretion of the teacher. Students should be allowed at least one additional retake if the score is below 70%. Teachers may also use a combination of retakes and virtual review sessions to ensure the student is comprehending the material. Please note that certain courses such as AP, honors, and more may have additional restrictions on retakes.

Assignment Attempts

Students are allowed two attempts on assignments. If the first attempt is below 80%, the student will automatically be prompted to take the second attempt. Should the student score 80% or above on the first attempt, no additional attempt is permitted. Please note that attempts may vary based on certain course types and at the teacher’s discretion.

TESTING

Since Brightspire Virtual School is a private school, we do not require any specific state standardized testing in order to graduate. It is likely, though, that students will need to take certain standardized tests in order to apply for college. Brightspire does not offer or make arrangements for any of these tests, including, but not limited to, the SAT, ACT, and AP exams. The student/guardian is fully responsible for securing a testing location. If you have questions, please contact Brightspire support.

STUDENT RECORDS

Permanent Record

Brightspire Virtual School maintains a permanent record for each student. When applicable, records concerning standardized test scores, health information, Individual Education Plans (IEP), and behavioral records will also be included. This record is confidential and open to parental inspection upon request. If a student transfers out of Brightspire Virtual School, the records can be sent once requested by the receiving school.

School Transcripts of Credits

Brightspire Virtual School maintains a transcript of all classes attempted and completed through Brightspire Virtual School. Transcripts may also include credits transferred from other educational institutions.

Repeating a Course

Students are NOT able to repeat courses they have previously completed, unless the courses have been failed. NCAA however may have different rules/requirements.

Credit Transfer

Credits transferring from other institutions will be evaluated and accepted at Brightspire’s discretion. Generally, credit granted by schools accredited through Cognia or equivalent regional accreditation associations will be accepted. However, Brightspire Virtual School reserves the right to deny the transfer of credits. Credits granted from other institutions or home school instruction may be accepted but are subject to in-depth review. Students will be asked to provide an outline of the courses covered,  a report of the assignments completed, and grades earned. Additional information may be required.

Academic records reflecting earned credit are required for evaluation during the enrollment process to confirm all eligible transfer credit. Brightspire Virtual School and our academic team may contact the school/institution directly to clarify details in the academic records provided and/or to request additional records as needed. By sending academic records to Brightspire Virtual School, the guardian/student has granted permission to Brightspire and our academic team to contact the school/institution directly for the purpose of evaluating transfer credit eligibility.

Transfer GPA

If credits are transferred into our institution, and you will earn a diploma from our institution, we will add the previous course(s), credit(s), and grade(s) onto our transcript analysis showing previous school, course, credit, and grade. ALL courses and grades will be adapted to our unweighted grading scale. For example: If your student transfers in at a 4.5 weighted GPA, the equivalent for Brightspire would be 4.0. If your student transfers in with a 4.1 weighted GPA, you will see the equivalent of closer to a 3.6 with our unweighted scale.

Students entering ninth grade must submit copies of middle school report cards/transcripts that reflect high school credits earned if applicable.

Course Add or Drop

Students may add or drop courses at any time. Courses dropped within the first seven days of activation within the Learning MLMS will not appear on a student’s transcript. Courses dropped outside of the seven-day drop/add period will display in the student’s transcript as ‘incomplete,’ and no final grade or credit can be issued. When adding courses, additional fees may occur if a course is added after seven days of semester start date and based on the payment plan selected.

COURSE EXTENSIONS

Students may request a two-week (14 calendar days) extension per course if additional time is needed. Extensions must be taken at the end of the course to extend the course for a short amount of time. The student has two-weeks from the end of the course to the beginning of the extension to request it and complete the necessary paperwork. An extended grace period may be purchased for an additional fee required per course to extend the end date an additional four-weeks (28 calendar days), starting from the end date of the two-week extension. Any extension past the end date of the extended grace period will require the purchase of an additional 18-week semester course.

STATE REQUIREMENTS

State Department of Education requirements for virtual schooling can vary widely and change often. It is your responsibility, and we encourage you, to continually verify and adhere to any and all state regulations to ensure that a student’s virtual education meets all necessary standards within your state, including but not limited to, curriculum standards, teacher qualifications, student engagement, assessment, or accreditation. If, during enrollment, your residential address changes, it is your responsibility to inform Brightspire of these changes. Additional proof of residency may be required to support a change of address.

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION

Graduation Requirements

Students must fulfill all of the following requirements set by Brightspire Virtual School prior to graduating: 1) earn the minimum number of credits required based on the selected diploma path 2) fulfill all subject area requirements 3) fulfill the residency requirement: Although credits may be transferred from other regionally accredited institutions, at least 6 credits are required through Brightspire Virtual School during the most recent enrollment to receive a diploma from our institution. The prospective graduate is responsible for providing records of all previously completed high school coursework in the form of an official transcript. Although Brightspire can request transcripts from the student’s previous school, it is the responsibility of the student or guardian to ensure those transcripts are received.

Students may choose one of the following graduation paths:

  • Standard Diploma: Requires 22 credits minimum and a 2.0 minimum GPA
  • Honors Diploma: Requires 24 credits minimum (of those credits, at least 3 must be in Honors or AP® level courses) and a 3.0 minimum GPA

Brightspire Virtual School holds the right to modify graduation requirements at any time, without notice, to ensure accreditation requirements and/or rigorous academic standards are being upheld.

Graduation Application

Students who believe they are prepared for graduation are required to undergo an Academic Review process. The review will determine whether the student has completed all of the necessary graduation requirements. To begin this process, a Graduation Application must be submitted. The submittal of a Graduation Application does not guarantee that the student will be cleared for graduation. If the review proves that additional credits are needed, the student must complete them before being allowed to graduate. If graduation is denied, the student will be notified in writing, and the results of the Academic Review will be made available.

Postsecondary Considerations

Credits or a diploma from an accredited private online school are generally accepted by most colleges and universities. However, we recommend checking with the institutions your student is interested in to confirm their specific admission requirements.

Students with any disability, which may impair their ability to successfully complete a course should contact Brightspire Virtual School directly. Accommodations are determined on an individual basis. Please note that not all accommodations and modifications are applicable to Brightspire Virtual School courses. An extended grace period may be purchased for an additional fee required per course to extend the end date an additional four-weeks (28 calendar days), starting from the end date of the two-week extension. Any extension past the end date of the extended grace period will require the purchase of an additional 18-week semester course.

Please note that potential NCAA athletes have specific course length, course type, and course assignment submission requirements. Any fees resulting from required materials for any course are not included in tuition costs and are the responsibility of the student or parent/guardian.
